Saturday September 21, Arles

Saturday afternoon we came back to Arles to "walk in the footsteps of Vincent Van Gogh." A pretty spectacular afternoon, as most of the city hasn't changed in hundreds of years.

The city was originally built by the Roman Empire. That's a coliseum where gladiators fought on the left, with 15th-18th century buildings on the right:

Many winding streets:

And now for the Van Gogh... First, a view of the top of our ship, the Rhone River, and one end of a railroad bridge that was blown up by the Allies during WWII:

And the same view of the Rhone in "Starry Night"...

Here are Jill and I in front of "Cafe Van Gogh":

And Van Gogh's version, "The Night Cafe":

And finally, a photo of the courtyard of the hospital in which Van Gogh stayed after cutting off his ear after an argument with his roommate Paul Gaugin:

And Van Gogh's "Hospital in Arles":

Quite an experience, I must say...
